Getting there & parking

Stadium of Light is an away-day destination where the final approach matters. Check the fixture information before travel because parking, segregation and coach arrangements can change.

Parking options

Compare official and private matchday parking

Official matchday parking

General stadium parking is limited and much of the inventory is committed to seasonal, hospitality or accessible users. Sunderland's current visitor information should be checked before assuming any on-site space is available.

City-centre car parks such as St Mary's are a practical official alternative about 10-15 minutes away. A park-and-ride arrangement at Sunderland Enterprise Park is used for many fixtures, but confirm operation and timings for the specific match.

Private matchday parking

JustPark lists reservable managed spaces and private driveways in Sunderland. Search around the stadium postcode, then check the real walking route, access window and cancellation terms before booking.

Private spaces are independent of the club; a very close driveway may still sit inside the post-match traffic queue.

Availability, prices and access arrangements can change by fixture. Always check the booking details before travelling.

By train

Sunderland station is around a 15-20 minute walk across the Wear. St Peter's Metro is closest to the visiting approach for the journey towards the city, while Stadium of Light Metro is used for northbound travel after matches; follow the fixture's crowd-management instructions.

By bus or coach

Check the current local timetable for the final leg to Stadium of Light. Away coaches and minibuses should follow the instructions issued by the visiting club and must not assume a public parking bay.

Driving

The A19 and A1231 provide the main approaches. A matchday parking-control scheme covers streets around the stadium and roads close during crowd movements, so do not hunt for residential parking near the ground.

Use SR5 1SU only for the general area, then follow matchday signs and the entrance named in your parking instructions. Allow extra time for residential roads and pedestrian traffic.

After the match

Expect the roads immediately around Stadium of Light to move slowly while pedestrians clear. Rail users should confirm the last practical connection; drivers may prefer to wait before joining the main route.

Travel, parking, ticket allocations and stadium procedures can change by fixture. Check the latest information from both clubs and the relevant operator before travelling. Guide checked 28 September 2026.
